Proposals to improve awareness of contemporary Thai arts
Proposals have been drafted to establish a Thai arts association in the UK to promote a wider awareness of the lively Thai contemporary arts scene and to encourage UK-based Thais to come together and celebrate the rich artisitic heritage of their country. According to the authors Jon and Sukanjana Boagey and Nanthapa Cooper, the plan is to set up an organisation that can promote contemporary Thai artists (in the broadest sense) and provide opportunities for creative expression by those of Thai origin and their families living in the UK, particularly as way of exploring issues such as identity and relationships. 'In this way we hope to begin to challenge stereotypes of Thailand and to act as a focus for the Thai community' the authors say in their introduction.Download a copy of the proposals here>>> |
The Thai Craft Association (TCA) works with over 60 partner projects throughout Thailand to promote and sell traditional and contemporary crafts. It organises monthly craft sales in Bangkok and organises craft tours and demonstrations by artisans. Products such as hand-woven silk and cotton (shown above) are produced to a very high standard and reflect regional and local weaving traditions. Village projects and small businesses are supported through the work of organisations such as the TCA which is able to market the goods and pass on the income direct to the crafts people. TCA is a member of the International Federation of Fair Trade Organisations. If you are planning a trip to Bangkok check out the TCA web site for details of the next craft fair. More>> |
