Buddhist Ceremony in UK November 2009 Kathina Robe Ceremony Kathina is a specific variety of tree where its foliage was used as a weaving material to make robes for Buddhist monks in the Buddhas time. After the monks have endured the three months retreat in their own monastery, they are then allowed to travel again. The last day of the Rains retreat is called Awk Phansa (in Thai), which means leaving the Rains retreat. This day marks the end of the Buddhist lent and falls on the full moon day of the eleventh lunar month (October). It represents a day of joyful celebration and merit-making for the lay devotees. During this period, the Kathina Robe ceremony also take place. At the end of the retreat people would hold a grand festival in honor of the monks by making offerings of food in numerous monasteries. At the same time, they would prepare special yellow robes offer to the Sangha. This offering is called Kathina. This ritual can only be done within one month from the end of the Rains Retreat. Student and marriage partners get first ID Cards 28 Nov - Thai nationals planning to stay in the UK as a student or as a marriage partner in the UK will be among the first to required to apply for an ID card under new regulations introduced this week. The Home Office announced that foreign nationals will begin applying this week for identity cards. Their facial image and fingerprints will be taken and linked to an ID card. Each ID card will be unique, and will combine the cardholders biometric data with their checked and confirmed identity details - a biographical footprint. These identity details and the biometrics will be stored on the national identity register. Basic identity information will also be held in a chip on the ID card itself. Over the next three weeks enrolment identity card centres for foreign nationals will open in Cardiff, Glasgow, Northern Ireland, Sheffield, Solihull and Liverpool. Loy Kratong Festival November 2009
"Loy Krathong" is the festival held in November, which commences on the evening of the full moon day and by the full moon. Loy means to float and a Krathong is a name for the lotus-shaped vessel made of banana leaves. The Krathong usually contains a candle, three incense sticks, fresh flowers and some coins. People would gathere launch their krathong the the rivers, canals, ponds and any water way. They also light the candles and incense sticks and give thanks to the Goddess of water. It is believed that the Krathongs would carry away their bad luck, and bring forth their wishes. Indeed, it is a time to be joyous and happy as any previous suffering has been cast away together with the Krathongs. A beauty contest is an important part of the Thai festival and for only this occasion it is called Miss Noppamas Contest. Noppamas was the chief royal consort of the King, named Lithai in the Sukhothai period. She was said to have made the first ever decorated Krathong to float in the river on the occasion.
Some people also launch the " Komloy" (the Floting Lantern) up to the sky, It is believed that the Komloys would carry away their bad luck and bring forth their wishes too. The Forest Hermitage (Wat Pha Santidhamma) Warwickshire Buddhist Teaching and Practice in the Heart of England.
